Playing on the ego of the people
Goading them to doing
Raising them as high as steeple
Behind the scene is ruin.

Break in wages you proclaim
The workers loyally bear
With dirty work ye rose to fame
Ye hypocrites take care.

A false impression you convey
Deny it if you can
Like a donkey on you bray
Grinding out your hellish plan.

"On reading in the capitalist press
 that the workers loyally accepted a 
 reduction in wages and prepare to bear
 another if need be."

In 1925 Baldwin had to deal with the
crisis in the coal industry and miners
agreed to a reduction in wages for a
limited period. Many felt Baldwin went
back on his promises to the miners,
extending the period of time.
