An a Harried Starling
in the U Pipe at No 4 Shaft
In the U pipe there you build your nest,
Thinking thus, that you knew best,
Implicit trust you placed in man,
But Alas! Alas! he put the ban.
With joy and hope and pleasure,
You placed the straw together,
With eggs to lay, and brood to hatch,
Husband sentinel, kept the watch.
At times when pussy ventured near,
The shrillest cry, one could hear,
A warning thus to loving dame,
Perhaps he called her by her name.
When at last the brood arrived,
The parents hard to feed did strive,
But youth with murderous passion bent,
Upon the fledglings thus got vent.
Could it be true or just a dream,
The pair returned upon the scene,
That hallowed spot was now a wreck,
While sorrowing hearts did frown and fret.
You villainous gang a lesson take,
Think Upon the hearts you break,
Go hang your heads, most wicked, vile,
The name of man you thus defile.
